Servants’ Pasts: Late-Eighteenth to Twentieth-Century South Asia, volume 2

The importance of domestic service as a growing area of occupation and employment in contemporary South Asia is marked by a surprising silence about it in historical scholarship. The second volume of Servants’ Pasts covers the colonial and postcolonial periods. It lays out the intricate relationship between domestic work and employment in light of the growth of first, new moral regimes under colonialism and second, public avenues of employment under colonial institutions such as the municipality, school and hospital.

Servants' Pasts: Sixteenth to Eighteenth Century, South Asia, Vol. 1

Domestic servants have always been, and continue to be, ubiquitous in the households of middle and upper income rural and urban South Asia. They are also strikingly visible in art forms: paintings, sculptures, photographs, cinema, plays, stories, etc. Yet, they remain absent from scholarly research with very few recent exceptions.

Domestic service was an important category of labour and social relationships in early modern and colonial India but the domestic servant has largely remained absent from historians’ accounts of South Asia. Servants’ Pasts, Sixteenth to Eighteenth Century South Asia, Vol. 1, much like Vol. 2, covers a range of polities; it specifically explores the period from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century, and provides untold accounts of the ideals and practices of master/mistress-servant relationships during that period.

In this essay at hand Frederick Cooper draws a grim comparison: In the 18^th and 19^th century millions of Africans were shipped over the Atlantic by force to drudge on the plantations in America. Many of them died during the passage. Today, numerous Africans grasp the nettle of the moment and cross the ocean in order to find work. And many of them die. Migrants in former centuries were forced to mobility. However, present migrants are in a certain way “the freest of the free”. They went from Africa to Europe voluntarily, under enormous effort and with an immense risk. What links former and present migration, is the inequality of economic relations. Slave trade and labour migration in the 21^st century are both the result of an intensified connection alongside a growing disparity between these two parts of the world.

Empire, Civil Society, and the Beginnings of Colonial Education in India tells a story of radical educational change. In the early nineteenth century, an imperial civil society movement promoted modern elementary ‘schools for all’. This movement included British, American, and German missionaries and Indian intellectuals and social reformers. They organized themselves in non-governmental organizations, which aimed to change Indian education. First, they introduced a new culture of schooling, centred on memorization, examination, and technocratic management. Second, they laid the ground for the building of the colonial system of education, which substituted indigenous education. Third, they broadened the social accessibility of schooling. However, for the nineteenth-century reformers, education for all did not mean equal education for all: elementary schooling became a means to teach different subalterns ‘their place’ in colonial society. Finally, the educational movement also furthered the building of a secular ‘national education’ in England. Studying these trajectories and developments in detail, this book contributes to a sharpening of the concept of ‘colonial education’ as one version of the modern nineteenth century grammar of schooling.

Child Fostering in West Africa in the 20th Century

In Transfers of Belonging, Erdmute Alber traces the history of child fostering in northern Benin from the pre-colonial past to the present by pointing out the embeddedness of child foster practices and norms in a wider political process of change. Child fostering was, for a long time, not just one way of raising children, but seen as the appropriate way of doing so. This changed profoundly with the arrival of European ideas about birth parents being the ‘right’ parents, but also with the introduction of schooling and the differentiation of life chances. Besides providing deep historical and ethnographical insights, Transfers of Belonging offers a new theoretical frame for conceptualizing parenting.

La répartition des périodes de travail et non-travail dans un parcours de vie varie selon l'époque historique, le contexte spatial et la classe sociale. 
Le volume Arbeit im Lebenslauf. Verhandlungen von (erwerbs-) biographischer Normalität(« Le travail dans le parcours de vie. Négocier la norme dans les trajectoires professionnelles») (transcript) est une collection d’essais, co-édité par Therese Garstenauer, Thomas Hübel, and Klara Löffler. Il relativise les idées reçues sur les normes du travail, en essayant de répondre à la question, comment les individus et les groupes réagissent face aux changements relatifs à l'organisation sociale et économique du travail: Quels sont les impacts sur leurs comportements, si ils ne répondent pas aux standards conceptuels et fictionnels de la normalité. Comment cela mène aux

déviations, aux concurrences et au changement? Les différents auteurs donnent

un aperçu multidisciplinaire sur les débats actuels liés au travail, la précarité et

le changement social.

Rendre la justice à Amid

Dans son Rendre la justice à Amid (Brill), Yavuz Aykan analyse la vie juridique de la ville d’Amid, capitale de la province ottomane de Diyarbakir, au 18ème siècle. A partir des procès-verbaux des tribunaux des villes d’Amid, Harput et Mardin, il met en lumière la centralité du cadi, du gouverneur provincial (vali) et du mufti dans le champ opératoire de la loi. Retraçant la généalogie des textes utilisés par le mufti provincial, Aykan étudie aussi la circulation de diverses interprétations juridiques de la Grande Syrie à la Transoxiane et la Horde d'Or, et leur intégration dans la pratique juridique ottomane. Ce livre offre ainsi une approche renouvelée et historicisée des acteurs et hiérarchies de systèmes juridiques de ce cadre provincial.

Anthropologie der Arbeit

Dans son ouvrage Anthropologie der Arbeit (Springer VS), Gerd Spittler analyse à l’aide de cas d’études ethnographiques, l’unité et la diversité du travail. Le spectre s’étend du travail salarié aux chasseurs et collectionneurs, aux paysans et bergers, en passant par la ferme familiale et le travail domestique, jusqu’au travail des enfants.

Arbeiter in der Moderne

Dans son ouvrage Arbeiter in der Moderne (Campus), Jürgen Schmidt retrace l’histoire des ouvrières et ouvriers, leurs conditions de travail, leurs comportements et leurs valeurs, ainsi que leurs milieux de vie et leurs organisations. Il montre clairement comment les efforts menés par la main-d’œuvre ouvrière au 19^e et 20^e siècle, pour pouvoir représenter ses intérêts dans le monde du capitalisme moderne, étaient étroitement attachés au cadre contextuel. Grâce à cette perspective, l’historicité de certains aspects centraux de la société de travail du 21^e siècle devient plus évidente.

Anthropological Perspectives on Care

Anthropological Perspectives on Care (Palgrave Macmillan) examine la notion de care d’une perspective anthropologique. Les éditrices Erdmute Alber et Heike Drotbohm complémentent des approches antérieures en argumentant qu’une interprétation de la notion de care en relation aux trois différents concepts, travail, parenté et parcours de vie faciliterait les distinctions empiriques et conceptuelles entre les différentes activités qui sont caractérisées comme care.

The History of Labour Intermediation

Sigrid Wadauer est co-éditrice du recueil The History of Labour Intermediation. Institutions and Finding Employment in Nineteenth and Early Twentieth Centuries (Berghahn). Les études du recueil enquêtent sur la recherche d’emploi et les agences de placement dans certains pays européens, l’Australie et l’Indes au 19^e et 20^e siècle. Elles illustrent différentes approches historiographiques, allant de l’histoire institutionnelle à l’analyse de pratiques et en passant par des récits autobiographiques.

L´ouvrage d’Andreas Eckert, Babacar Fall et Ineke Phaf-Rheinberger Travail et culture dans un monde globalisé. De l’Afrique à l’Amérique latine (Karthala) rassemble plusieurs contributions sur l'histoire comparée des diverses formes et cultures de travail. En mettant l'accent sur ​​l'Afrique et l'Amérique latine, les auteurs discutent également de questions concernant les organisations, la manière d’écrire l’histoire, la résistance et la créativité, l’impact des cultures locales, ainsi que les attentes des jeunes.

One Hundred Years of Servitude

Dans son ouvrage, One Hundred Years of Servitude. Political Economy of Tea Plantations in Colonial Assam (Tulika Books), Rana P. Behal enquête sur l’histoire des plantations de thé dans la région de l’Assam à l’époque de l’empire britannique. Il analyse en six chapitres le début de l’essor de l’industrie théière, des années 1840 jusqu’au milieu du XXe siècle. Pour répondre aux besoins d’un marché mondial croissant, plus de deux millions de personnes avaient été contraintes au travail forcé.

Port Cities and Global Legacies

Alice Mah développe dans son ouvrage Port Cities and Global Legacies. Urban Identity, Waterfront Work, and Radicalism (Palgrave Macmillan) le concept de 'global legacies', qui oscille entre les aspects positifs de 'patrimoine' et les connotations négatives d' 'héritage'. Cette tension se situe au cœur de son étude sur les formes durables, les processus et les idées liés au concept de 'global', influant jusqu’à aujourd’hui les identités et politiques urbaines. Comme notamment les villes portuaires, caractérisées par leurs dynamiques globales, leurs importantes populations migrantes, leurs longues histoires du monde du travail précaire et leurs réseaux de commerces internationaux, révélant ainsi une multitude de 'global legacies'.

Violent Intermediaries

Le ouvrage de Michelle R. Moyd Violent Intermediaries. African Soldiers, Conquest, and Everyday Colonialism in German East Africa (Ohio University Press) analyse le rôle des Askaris dans la mise en place et le maintien de la domination coloniale allemande dans l’Afrique de l’Est. La contextualisation des acteurs dans les vastes processus historiques du XIXe siècle en Afrique,  permet à Moyd de représenter avec une certaine sensibilité les Askaris ; d’une part, comme une élite locale ambitieuse proche du pouvoir colonial allemand et d’autre part, comme victime de la violence coloniale.
